Building the Port of NEOM: An Electric Oxagon Gateway for Europe-gulf Trade

The operational corridor has been communicated as “Europe- Egypt- NEOM- GCC: your faster route,” connecting Europe to Egypt’s Damietta and Safaga ports, on to NEOM Port, and then overland to Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman. NEOM has also positioned the port as a gateway supported by a growing network of international and regional logistics partners, with the corridor combining sea and land transport for faster and more efficient cargo movement. In route specifics shared in reporting, goods move by lorries to Italy’s Port of Trieste, ship to Egypt via Damietta, continue by lorries to Safaga, then ship to the Port of NEOM before traveling overland into Gulf markets and Iraq.

From Red Sea Hub to Advanced Terminal: What Is Being Built

On the infrastructure side, the main container terminal is described as built to handle the world’s largest ships and set to open this year with a capacity of 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units. NEOM also said that in June last year the port received its first fully automated, remotely operated cranes—described as the first in the Kingdom—positioning automation as a practical step in raising operating standards. In a separate operational update, NEOM said the port is already operating at full capacity as a Red Sea hub, handling multiple cargo types and linking trade flows from the Americas, Europe, and Egypt to Gulf and Iraqi markets.

The Port of NEOM also sits within Oxagon, an industrial city inside NEOM that is being developed as Saudi Arabia focuses on diversifying its economy from oil. NEOM has invested more than 7.5 billion Saudi riyals (US$2 billion) to develop the sustainable port, and it continues to present the site as a core element of a broader logistics-and-industry push. NEOM’s own materials say the Port of NEOM is open for business, operating 24/7 with expanded operations, and facilitating trade across northwest Saudi Arabia via intermodal corridors linking Egypt, the region, and Europe as integration with Oxagon’s industrial ecosystem deepens.

For shippers, the promise is time. One expert assessment quoted in reporting said the corridor can cut shipping times by more than half, with cargo that once took 10 to 12 days to reach Gulf destinations arriving in 4 to 6 days by combining short-sea routes with fast overland transport. Commentators also link the corridor’s appeal to less waiting time, simpler procedures, and reduced congestion. Within this context, the Port of NEOM Oxagon electric positioning is tied to statements that the port relies on renewable energy, alongside its automation and corridor design, to strengthen efficiency and present a sustainability-forward logistics option for Europe-to-Gulf trade.
