Women in Saudi Logistics Workforce: The Quiet, Determined Rise Powering a New Era

Across Saudi Arabia, more women are stepping into work linked to logistics. You can now see women managing logistics inside modern factories and leading teams on production floors. Training from government and private sector initiatives is helping women succeed in these roles. This shift is also changing communities, as more women earn independent incomes and support their families.

Mobility is one of the biggest enablers of this change. Until June 2018, Saudi Arabia banned women from driving by law. After that change, new pathways opened in transportation and work. Ride-hailing platforms built programs and features that made driving a realistic option for more women.

Several clear data points show how fast this movement has grown. In 2021, the number of Saudi women working as ride-hailing drivers rose from around 600 to nearly 3,900. Over 21 million ride-hailing trips were operated in Saudi Arabia across 27 licensed apps. These numbers show both a growing supply of women drivers and strong demand for ride-hailing services.

What This Means for Logistics, Not Just Transport

The same confidence and access that support driving jobs can also support wider logistics careers. In factories, women are already operating machinery, overseeing production lines, and managing logistics. Some factories even run all-female production lines that are described as more efficient, organized, and quality-focused. As more factories recruit and retain female talent, women gain more routes into supply chain and operations work.

Work platforms are also adapting to cultural needs. Uber introduced features that help women feel safer and more in control, such as Women Preferred View and Women Rider Preference, letting women drivers choose to accept only female riders. Uber also announced a Women Drivers feature for matching female riders with female drivers, and said it will be available through Uber Reserve so riders can schedule up to 30 minutes in advance.

Women’s wider economic participation is rising alongside these changes. One source says women’s workforce participation increased from 22% to over 36% in under a decade. Another source reports women’s labour participation reached 35.8% by Q2 2024. At the same time, challenges still exist, including transportation gaps, workplace accommodations, and societal resistance in some regions. Even so, the direction is clear: Women in Saudi logistics workforce are becoming more visible, more trained, and more central to how work gets done.
